To Celebrate or Not to Celebrate That is the Question

Today, is one of those days where my kids wake up with great anticipation of the day to come. Kind of like Christmas morning...kind of like their birthdays...kind of like the day we leave for vacation, the kids woke up today looking forward to Halloween and all of its treats and treasures. As a family, who is committed to Christ, we settled the Halloween question years ago. We celebrate without question and here's why:

1. Halloween gives us an opportunity to talk to our kids about evil in the world and how we worship God instead of practicing evil.

2. Halloween gives us an opportunity to build relationships with our neighbors. When else can you knock on every one's door, have a brief conversation and move on? On top of that, tonight, we will have around 60 people in our front yard for our street's party and costume parade.

3. Halloween gives us something to connect with our kids around besides the normal day-to-day routine. We have been working on costumes for weeks and have been talking about them for months.

I could list a few more reasons, but it would appear that I am Halloween obcessed, which I'm not. Anyway, this begs the question, how do you decide which parties, holidays, and celebrations that you join in? Which do you participate in...which do you avoid?
