Last week was an interesting week in the news. It was an interesting week, but there was no major headline until Thursday morning when Comey testified before the Senate Intelligence Committee. Watching the build up to this was something to behold. It was the Super Bowl of politics blended with the themes of a summer blockbuster spy thriller. As I considered the implications of this day for our lives, the message for the week came quickly. We live in a society that loves to build people up and then tear them down. We live in a culture that is slow to trust but quick to accuse. As Christ followers, we must realize this and do what we can to live a life free from accusation.
This starts with being right with God. Colossians 1 says that we have been reconciled to God so we are holy, without blemish, and free from accusation. When we know that we are right with God, we can stay sensitive to His spirit and have a clear conscience. With a clear conscience and a faith that is firm and established, we can also live clean lives that shame our accusers. This was the message of the day.
Now, for some things that I wish I said.
- We all face accusers.
- It never fun to be accused especially when we are innocent.
- We must look at every accusation for a grain of truth so that we can live accusation free in the future.
- How we respond to our accusers tells much about our character.
- We can't play the victim card when our wrong doings bring accusation upon us. That's how the world plays - not us.
- We can live as foreigners and exiles by committing to clean living.
On thing that I will never forget from yesterday is what happened after we lost power at Parkway Victoria. We continued on in the "lights out" service. We worshiped together. We sacrificially gave. We prayed for each other. God didn't stop working. When the lights came up, I was afraid that I might be the only one left in the room, but that wasn't the case. You were there, God was there, and He was working.
