The church needs a little Oprah infusion. Not her thoughts or theology but the energy and the excitement that she brings to everything she touches. Let me give you a little context to these comments. For the last two days, I have been glued to the couch thanks to the flu. So at yesterday at 4, when Oprah came on, Kristi and I watched Oprah's interview with Valerie Bertenelli. Then today, I watched again. Who can resist Rick Springfield, Henry Winkler, and William Shatner. Just typing that makes me want to turn in my man card, but I couldn't turn away. The crowd was pumped. They clapped and cheered for everything that happened. A star comes on stage and they go nuts. They are given a $20 gift and you would have thought that they had won the lottery. On a previous show (which I didn't watch) Oprah gave away a free download of Suzie Orman's book on women and money. Over a million people took her up on the offer and downloaded the book. She may also be the most influential woman involved in presidential politics this year. Her support of Barack Obama catapulted him to the national stage. The church needs a little Oprah.
We need engaging, exciting worship experiences where people are expecting God to do great things. We need to discover ways that people actually want to learn and grow in ways that don't have to be program driven. We need to find a way for the church's influence to be known in every area of life.
Maybe tomorrow, I will look at how the church needs a little Jerry Springer....maybe not.
