Next year, Nick and Leah are going to a new school. We didn't move, but the school boundaries did. Now, our "neighborhood" school is no longer our school and they get to go to a school that is about 4 miles away. Bummer, but not what I am writing about.
Since they are moving not just to a new school, but to a brand new school, everything about the school is being formed before our eyes even the building. Last night, Kristi held the first ever meeting of the Welcome Committee for Sycolin Creek Elementary School PTA. Six or eight ladies (not sure how many because I was banished upstairs with the kids) met to talk about how that could create a warm, welcoming environment at the school. This is especially important in a new school and in an area as transient as DC.
Since I was not in the room, I had do a little spying to catch bits and pieces of what was going on down there. I could not have been more proud of my wife as she was leading this meeting. Kristi has the gift of hospitality. She throws parties in her sleep. She is also a strong leader. She can even lead a group of women - now that is saying something. Sometimes as a mom, the only parties she gets to throw are with three rug rats and often include chicken nuggets and the only leadership she gets to exhibit is enforcing nap times. While there is no more important role than that of mom (and dad). It is cool that she is getting to spread her wings and lead grown ups too.
